I stopped because I could not find the tenth document
A story about the tax on the tired and the walls made of paper and ghosts.
Do you ever wonder if the reason you are still drowning in credit card payments is because you are a bad person or because a bank clerk in forgot to mail you a single piece of paper?
My eyes sting while I write this because I got a handful of cheap shampoo in them ago and now the world looks like a red smudge and I am angry at everything that should be simple but is not. It is a small thing to have soap in your eyes and it is a small thing to missing a bank statement but both things can stop your life in its tracks and make you want to go to sleep for a hundred years.
The Night the Momentum Stalled
Karen was sitting on her sofa at on a Tuesday night and she had her laptop balanced on her knees and she was almost home. She had been staring at a screen that asked for eleven different documents and she had already found nine of them. She found the tax returns from and she found the pay stubs from her current job and she found the utility bill that proved she lived where she said she lived.
She felt strong and she felt like a grown man who handles his business and she felt like she might finally breathe again. Then she hit the tenth document.
Tax Returns (2 Years)
Current Pay Stubs
Utility Bills
Tenth Document: Closed Account Statement
The tenth document was a statement from a credit card account she had closed and she did not have the login anymore and the bank website told her they would mail a code to a phone number she gave up when she moved to Ohio. It was now and the house was quiet and the air was heavy and the laptop was getting hot against her legs. She looked at the eleventh requirement and it was a letter from a former boss to prove she was not fired for stealing.
She did not lose interest in being debt-free and she did not decide that 24 percent interest was actually a good deal and she did not stop caring about her future. She just hit a wall that was made of paper and ghosts and she did not have the strength to climb it at that hour and so she shut the laptop. She told herself she would find the papers on Saturday morning after a cup of coffee and then she did not touch the application again for .
We call this application abandonment in the business world and the people in suits like to say it happens because the user has low intent. They think it means the person was just browsing and they think it means the person was not serious about fixing their life.
They are wrong and they are probably wrong because they have assistants who find their papers for them. What actually happened to Karen was a spike in the cost of the work and the cost became higher than she could pay with the energy she had left in her bones.
The Pipe Organ Metaphor
Ruby K.-H. is a pipe organ tuner and she knows more about complex systems than any banker I have ever met. A pipe organ is a massive beast of wood and lead and wind and it has thousands of moving parts that all have to move at the exact same time or the music sounds like a cat in a blender.
Ruby spends her days crawling inside the windchests and she moves through narrow gaps where the dust is a hundred years old. She told me that the most dangerous moment in her job is not when she finds a broken pipe. The most dangerous moment is when she has spent in the dark and she realizes she needs a specific brass wire that is sitting in her truck three blocks away.
“If I climb out of that organ to get the wire she will probably not go back in that day. The momentum is gone and the dark is too heavy and the work is too hard.”
– Ruby K.-H., Organ Tuner
This is not because Ruby is lazy and it is not because she does not love music but it is because the cost of that one wire became too high for that one moment.
Most systems that are meant to help people are built by people who love documents and they think that if you really want help you will find every scrap of paper they ask for. They use the paperwork to sort the good people from the bad people but that is a lie. All they are doing is sorting the people who have a filing cabinet from the people who have a life full of chaos and move boxes. They are sorting the people who have a working printer from the people who have to drive to a library and pay ten cents a page.
This is a tax on the tired and it is a tax on the people who are already at the end of their rope. If you are $20,000 in debt and you are working two jobs and you are trying to keep the kids fed then you do not have a team of researchers to help you find a statement from a bank that changed its name twice since you closed the account. You have a laptop and a headache and ten minutes before you fall asleep.
The Test You Never Asked to Take
When you hit that tenth document and you realize it will take a phone call to a robot and a three-day wait for a letter in the mail you feel a specific kind of shame. You feel like you failed the test and you feel like the system is telling you that you do not deserve to be free of the weight.
But the truth is that the system was built to be a wall and it was built to keep you exactly where you are so the interest can keep piling up like snow in a driveway. The people who stay in debt are often the ones who are the most serious about paying it back but they are also the ones who are the most tired of the game.
They start the process and they give it everything they have and then they hit the wall of the tenth document and they stop. They go back to making the minimum payments because the minimum payment is the path of least resistance and it is the only thing the bank makes easy for you to do.
A Path Without the Mountains
Moving toward the light doesn’t require a perfect file.
No Credit Check
Just to have the initial conversation.
Human First
Talk now, find the paperwork later.
Real Math
Hardship programs that actually cut interest.
You do not need a perfect file to start moving toward the light. You do not need to be a librarian or a private investigator to find a way out of the hole. There are places that understand that you are human and they understand that you are tired and they do not ask you to climb a mountain of paper before they will talk to you. They know that if they make the first step too hard then nobody will ever take it.
MyDebtPlan is built on the idea that the conversation should come first and the paperwork should come later. They do not run a credit check just to talk to you and they do not ask for a fee before they show you the numbers.
They look at your real creditors and your real income and they tell you exactly how much your payment could drop and they tell you when the finish line will be. They do not give you a calculator and a brochure and tell you to figure it out yourself. They walk you through the hardship programs and the interest rate cuts and the consolidation plans and they do it without making you find eleven documents at ten o clock at night.
When Karen finally opened her laptop again , she was in a much worse place than she had been on that Tuesday night. The interest had added another $1,400 to her balance and her car needed a new alternator and she felt like she was drowning in a sea of red ink. She realized then that the tenth document was not the problem. The problem was her belief that she had to be perfect to get help.
If you are waiting for a day when you have all the answers and all the papers and all the energy then you are going to be waiting until you are dead. The banks are counting on you to be a perfectionist and they are counting on you to be embarrassed by your own junk drawer. They want you to see the eleven boxes on the form and they want you to stop at number ten so they can keep their 40 percent of your paycheck every month.
Moving Through the Red Smudge
My eyes are still red and they still sting but the soap is mostly gone and I can see the keys again. Sometimes you just have to keep moving even when it hurts and even when you can only see out of one eye. You do not have to find the letter from your old boss and you do not have to call the bank in Ohio. You just have to be willing to have a conversation with someone who knows how to navigate the maze.
The weight of the debt is a physical thing and it sits on your chest and it makes your heart beat faster when you hear the mailman at the door. It makes you snap at your partner and it makes you buy the cheap shampoo that gets in your eyes and it makes you feel like you are less than the people who have no balance on their cards. But you are not less and you are just stuck in a system that was designed to keep you stuck.
The tenth document can wait, but your life cannot.
Stop trying to be the perfect applicant for a system that does not care about you. Stop waiting for the Saturday morning that never arrives.
You can start with a phone call or a click and you can do it while your junk drawer is still a mess and your taxes are still in a box under the bed. The sooner you realize that the paperwork is just a ghost then the sooner you can start walking toward the exit.
You can get a plan that shows you how to cut your payments by nearly half and you can see a date on the calendar where the debt is gone and the money in your pocket is yours again.
You do not need to be a pipe organ tuner like Ruby and you do not need to crawl through the dust. You just need to realize that the wall of documents is a choice and you can choose to walk around it.
The laptop is still there and the screen is still bright and the choice is still yours but you do not have to do it alone and you do not have to do it all tonight. You just have to do the one thing that is easy and that is the thing that changes everything. My eyes are finally clear and I hope yours are too because the view from the other side of the debt is much better than the one you have right now.
