Defining the Worship
A computer is a tool for some and a temple for others. For the person who views the computer as a tool, the time spent researching the difference between CL16 and CL18 latency is a net loss of productivity. For the person who views it as a temple, that same time is a ritual of devotion.
Both are valid, but we cause ourselves immense stress when we pretend to be one while actually being the other. Conversely, for the person who finds peace in the click of a seated RAM stick, the “Value” of the build includes the dopamine hit of the first successful boot. This is why a store that stocks both individual GPUs and high-end gaming laptops is the only honest way to shop. It doesn’t tell you who you are; it asks you who you want to be this Tuesday.
I stopped building my own work machines three years ago. I still build for fun, occasionally, when I have a week off and the weather is clear. But when I need to track a tropical depression or model a wave front, I want a machine that was put together by someone whose entire job is putting machines together. I want the warranty. I want the support. I want to be the meteorologist, not the IT guy.
